Workshop Diophantine Approximation July 28-August 2, 2003
Symposium dedicated to the 60th birthday of Professor Robert Tijdeman July 30, 2003
Lorentz Center, Leiden, The Netherlands
Organizers: Frits Beukers, Jan-Hendrik Evertse, Pieter Moree |
From Monday July 28-Saturday August 2, 2003 we will organize a workshop on Diophantine approximation. This workshop will be similar to meetings in Oberwolfach or Luminy. The participants are invited. Since our facilities are limited, we are unfortunately not able to accept participants other than those already invited. On Wednesday July 30 (the 60th birthday of Robert Tijdeman) there will be a special symposium for a general audience highlighting the work of Robert Tijdeman. To this one-day symposium, everybody is welcome.
Diophantine approximation is the branch of number theory dealing with
problems such as whether certain given numbers are rational or irrational,
or algebraic or transcendental, how well certain given numbers can be approximated
by rational or algebraic numbers, etc. The techniques from Diophantine
approximation have been vastly generalized, and today there are applications
to Diophantine equations and inequalities, algebraic number theory and
Diophantine geometry. During the workshop we intend to cover the whole
spectrum of Diophantine approximation, such as applications of effective
methods (linear forms in logarithms, transcendence) and ineffective methods
(Roth's theorem, Schmidt's Subspace Theorem), computational results, connections
with combinatorial word problems, and connections with Diophantine geometry.

Both the workshop and the symposium will take place at the Lorentz Center,
which is located at approximately 2 km. from the center of Leiden and from
the railway station "Leiden Centraal."
The Lorentz Center is located on the fourth floor (derde verdieping)
of the Oort Building (the Oort building is a new grey building which is
connected to the Huygens laboratory and opposite to the Mathematical Institute;
