For the course "Linear algebra and image processing" (Lineaire Algebra en Beeldverwerking) there are lectures ("Hoorcolleges") and exercise classes ("Werkcolleges"). The first lecture is on Wednesday 5th Febuary at 11:15 in room B02 (Snellius).
Lectures and exercise classes will both be held every week. Approximately every second week the class will take the form of a Matlab class, and will be held in computer rooms 302/304 and 306/308. The standard classes will be in room B02. A bonus point is available for attending the Matlab classes.
Office hours of the lecturer will be hours 5 and 6 (13:45-15:30) on Mondays (or by appointment) in room 206d in Snellius.
We will follow closely parts of the book "Linear algebra and its applications" by David Lay. Every student will need a copy of the book; for example, the weekly exercises will be set from the book.
See the timetable here
Locations TBAThere are two exams for the course, one in week 7 and one after the end of the course (date to be confirmed). The first exam will be held on 26th March at 11:15 in room ???, the normal time and place for the lecture. It will last 1.5 hours and cover the material we will cover from the first two chapters of the book (more details will be given nearer the time). The second exam will be held at 13:45 on Thursday 22nd May, place TBC, and will last 3 hours. It will cover material from the whole course, including that already covered in the first exam.
We denote by "grade 1" the grade from the first exam, etc. The total examination grade is calculated as follows:
Exam grade = max[ 0.3*grade 1 + 0.7 * grade 2, grade 2].
In particular, if you are unable to attend exam 1 this need not affect your final grade. Note that the exam grade is not (necessarily) equal to the final grade - see below.
The normal homework problems will not be graded, and will not count towards the final grade. However, you are extremely strongly recommended to attempt all the problems - the problems in the exam will be similar, and past experience suggests that ability to do he homework problems is a very strong predictor of exam success. The problems will be discussed during the classes, and you will have the opportunity to obtain help on problems you found difficult.
The Matlab classes do count towards the final grade: if you attend and participate in almost all the classes, you will receive a bonus point. The aim of this system is to encourage you to attend the classes. Whether this point is awarded is decided by the assistants running the classes.
The final grade out of 10 is calculated by the formula:
Final grade = min[exam grade + bonus, 10]
